Sage dialed Roman.

“Hey, what’s up baby?” Roman answered.

Sage quickly explained how her phone call with Owen had upset her, and how she believes he’s looking for a fight to prove his manhood.

“I’m sure of it. Owen’s got to be feeling like he got punked out of his house. I’m sure he feels the need to mark his territory,” Roman said, mentally reviewing the chapter on revenge from the player’s handbook.

“But that’s not who he is. He is a thinker, not a fighter. You should have heard him trying to sound all hard. And the language! Ugh…it was just vulgar,” Sage protested in frustration.

“Thinker or not, he’s still a man. And as a man he feels like he has to handle his business.”

“I could see that if he were the size of say you or Uncle Robert.”

“If he were my size he wouldn’t need to look for a fight, he’d have nothing to prove,” Roman explained. “It’s because he isn’t big he feels the need to prove something.”

“I don’t get it?”

“If you were with Casey and Lia was my cousin, who do you think Lia would be worried about?”

“Oh, she’d be worried about Casey definitely.”

“Why?”

“Just look at you.” She imagined her husband’s sturdy 6’5” frame.

“Right. Because you have no doubt I would be able to handle him. Therefore, I’d have nothing to prove. The more you expressed concern about Owen’s safety, the more you validated his need to defend his household.”

“Oh shoot! If I had known I was talking too much, I would have kept my mouth shut.”

“I’m not even going to touch that. Just remember it came out of your mouth, not mine.”

“I know I walked right into that one. But I thought the whole Napoleon complex thing was psychobabble.”

Roman tried not to break a smile as he thought to himself: “How could you not know it’s true when the dad who raised you has a Napoleon complex?” Instead he said, “Trust me it’s a real thing.”

“What do I do now that the horse is out the barn?” Sage asked.

“We can swing by his house and say we are dropping off the sunglasses he left our place. Or you can call Lia and tell her he’s coming home and you do not want any mess. It’s your choice.”

“Let’s just go over there, that way I’ll know everything will be cool.”

“You got it,” Roman said, “We just need to get to there at or before the time that Owen does. I’ll meet you at home and we can ride over there together.”

“That won’t be a problem. You can set your clock by the time Owen arrives home.”

“Wait. What if Lia calls us out on our pretense for coming over there? The glasses thing is kind of weak.”

A deep furrow appeared across Sage’s brow. “What do we care?” she replied emboldened by the fact that they would be on this mission together. “She’s the one cheating on her husband. She’s hardly in the position to claim the moral high ground.”
